With technological advancements having a huge impact on the way we all live our lives, it’s no surprise that mobile devices and smartphones have followed suit. This article will explore the evolution of the mobile phone, particularly in the last decade, and what could be on the horizon for mobile devices in the future.

The mobile phone

In the not-too-distant past, mobile phones were essentially there to provide people with the flexibility to make phone calls and send messages to one another without the need for a traditional landline. However, in the years that followed mobile phones evolved and access to the internet became more prominent. People could now send images, respond to emails and browse the internet from a small, handheld device, and there’s been no looking back ever since.

What did mobile phones look like 10 years ago?

As technology advanced, the market for mobile devices was soon flooded with smartphones, predominantly from the likes of Apple and Android brands such as HTC and Samsung. These mobile phones had improved cameras, mainly around 5MPs, and had a range of applications that could be downloaded via app stores such as Facebook, Instagram and Google Maps. Long gone were the traditional keypads, now replaced with large, illuminated touch screens.

The mobile phones of today

You would be hard-pressed to find an adult in the UK who does not own a smart mobile device today. Mobile phones are now considered to be an essential item, and many people use them for work and managing their everyday activities such as mobile banking, consuming entertainment, and navigation and travel.

Increasingly, many people now use their mobile phones for contactless payments, using services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. You can also use the likes of Uber to book convenient transport, access a range of games via apps such as Bingo and Scrabble, and control other smart devices within your home at the touch of a button.

Many companies also rely on the technology of mobile smart devices too, with lots of people using them for multi-factor authentication, sending emails and conducting video calls when on the move and out of the office. We rely so heavily on the smartphones of today that it could have an impact on how you conduct your business if you do not have access to a smart mobile device on a daily basis.

The future of mobile phones

With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in all walks of life and many different forms of technology, it’s no surprise that this will also play a part in the evolution of mobile phones in the future. Experts also predict that universal wireless charging will become more prominent, along with vastly improved cameras and displays and longer-lasting batteries to help power the increased performance.
