While the onset of the new remote working culture was sudden and unexpected (imposed in response to the regulations and national lockdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic), it seems as though work-at-home culture is here to stay, with several major international companies making the switch to facilitate permanent remote working. This has enabled many employees to save money, achieve a better work-life balance and even relocate to a new town or country – but if you’re a remote worker considering using your new-found freedom to up sticks to a new city, where are the most suitable places to move in the UK?

Newcastle

As you might expect from a city with one of the fastest-growing tech sectors in the UK, Newcastle is perfectly suited to the new remote working culture. Whether you want to set up your office at home (the local property market is competitive and laden with relative deals) or take your laptop to one of the city’s many Wi-Fi-friendly cafes, Newcastle is a great location to live as a remote worker. It’s no surprise that increasing numbers of Londoners have moved up to ‘the Toon’ since the pandemic.

Brighton

Located less than an hour away from London via train, Brighton is an increasingly popular choice with remote workers who still need to commute to the capital for meetings and office days. Considering that the average Brighton resident spends more on coffee each year than the average Brit, it’s no surprise that this iconic, bustling seaside town is bursting with cafes and coffee shops, the majority of which are Wi-Fi-friendly and well-suited to a casual day’s work by the seafront.

Glasgow

Along with the neighbouring City of Edinburgh, the property market in Glasgow has seen massive growth in recent years – it’s now easier and more cost-effective to buy and sell houses north of the border than it is in the capital. Accordingly, droves of remote workers are re-locating to Glasgow, lovingly known as ‘The Dear Green Place’. Well known for its traditional pubs and buzzing outdoor-cafe culture, it’s easy to find an accommodating remote workplace in the city – there are also great transport links to London and the rest of the UK, should you need to commute by train.

Liverpool

World-famous for Liverpool FC and The Beatles, the City of Liverpool (known as the ‘Pool of Life’ by the locals) is an increasingly desirable location for ex-Londoners and remote workers looking for a change of pace. Liverpool is home to a well-developed tech and IT infrastructure, which means it’s possible to get fast internet access in a wide range of bars and coffee shops all around the city – this is particularly handy if you don’t feel like working in the house. With competitive property prices and fast transport links to the rest of the country, Liverpool is perfect for remote workers looking to make a move.
